Supporting the Children’s Trust

House of Dorchester have been long term supporters of The Children’s Trust for around 10 years. In both 2010 and 2011 we have chosen not to send out Christmas cards and instead send out an email and donate £500 to the Children’s Trust. Yesterday, we had the honour of being shown around The Children’s Trust grounds in Tadworth. The Children’s Trust provides care, education, therapy and rehabilitation to children with multiple disabilities, complex health needs and acquired brain injury. Their services include the UK’s largest paediatric brain injury rehabilitation centre, support in the community for children and young people with acquired brain injury, The School for Profound Education for pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties, short breaks, transitional, palliative and long-term nursing care. We were, as ever, in awe of the great work the Children’s Trust do. Our highlight was hearing Bee sing “The Wheels on the Bus” to us, closely followed by going up to the wheelchair accessible tree house and gazing down over the 24 acre snowclad grounds. A very special coffee morning

The team at House of Dorchester’s head office in Alton got busy baking last night to make a veritable feast of chocolate and non chocolate delights all in aid of the Macmillan World’s Biggest Coffee morning event. From rocky road brownies made using House of Dorchester 70% dark chocolate, orange and milk chocolate bars, Chocolate Larder oats and honey biscuits to strawberry topped cupcakes to coffee mousse made with Chocolate Larder triple chocolate biscuits….. we have discovered that we have some truly talented chefs among us! All money raised from the coffee morning and cake sale goes directly to Macmillan. We were actually one day early so there is still time to participate in this event as the official World’s Biggest Coffee Morning day is tomorrow Friday 30th September. http://coffee.macmillan.org.uk/Home.aspx

What a LOTACHOC for Comic Relief!

It’s so great to see so many people already getting into the spirit of things for this year’s Red Nose Day – only the other day I was at the supermarket and came face to face with a human penguin!  Comic Relief definitely seems to bring out the funny side in everyone and only last week Julian, our Business Development Manager, got involved in a Sainsbury’s ‘Do something funny for money’ fundraising event  – lots of silly challenges including how many of our new ‘LOTACHOC’ chocolate coated pretzels (yummy!) you could eat in a minute – HOD 16 v Sainsburys 26!  The Sainsbury’s buyer was still eating them after the challenge had finished!

We’re all geared up for the International Food Exhibition at Excel, London (www.ife.co.uk) and are looking forward to a busy show talking to people about our new Chocolate Larder collection and our delicious range of chocolates.  Please pop along to see us on stand N1315!

Finally just a quick Easter reminder – be sure to place your orders for Easter delivery before 6th April 2011 – our chocolatiers are really busy at the moment!

A berry British summer

We love this time of year here at HOD, as there is an abundance of British berries out in full.  The season kicks off with British strawberries around May and raspberries and juicy gooseberries are perfectly in season as I write this!

British berries are a real summer time treat, whether used as part of an elaborate recipe or simply eaten with a fresh dollop of cream or dusting of icing sugar, they are just delicious. It is these flavours that inspired our 70% cocoa Dessert Chocolate Collection.

With Strawberry Cheesecake, mixed with real strawberry pieces, and Wild Berry Crumble, a sweet truffle whipped with raspberries, strawberries, blueberries and blackberries – they provide a delicate taste of British summer.

I’ve been experimenting at home with the best ways to fuse our chocolates with the berries being picked and the best one so far has been crumbling  a handful of Raspberry and Meringue Chunky Chocolate over Eton Mess – it was a very popular combination in my house! Click here for Delia’s simple Eton Mess recipe, if you want to try it out for yourself!

It’s not been all chocolate and meringue though at HOD. Our Chocolate Factory Manager Paul Barney and his wife Debbie, were hard at work raising £450 for Breast Cancer by taking part in the Bristol Sun Walk – which is a fantastic achievement – well done guys!

Cothay Manor Gardens

On Saturday Jeremy visited the beautiful Cothay Manor Gardens near Wellington, Somerset (not just for a nice day out!). He was there to help run our stall at the Garden, Plant and Food Fair in aid of St Margaret’s Hospice.

The event was really well attended and the weather was fine, meaning everyone got to view the gardens in their full splendour. The chocolates sold really well, apparently the new Caramel Connoisseur Collection was very popular and it was great to help raise a lot of money for a really worthwhile cause.

Before all this Jeremy was in Wincanton judging for the 2010 Great Taste Awards. Each year the judges blind taste almost 5000 speciality food and drink products from over 1100 producers. It’s a hard job but somebody has to do it!

Whilst Jeremy has been exercising his taste buds, Laura Treviss and Sarah Downing from our chocolate factory have been in training for the Dorchester Race for Life event. Together they raised £210 for Cancer Research UK by running 5k with around 2500 other women. I’d like to say a big well done from everyone here at House of Dorchester …….so……… well done!
